About the Centre

The Australian Centre for Public Communication was established in 2002 to facilitate research and debate about issues, ideas and developments in public communication, to assist in dissemination of research and knowledge about public communication and to promote ethical practice.

Public communication includes advertising, public relations, corporate communication, government and political campaigns, public education, and NGO and not-for-profit organisational communication. Public communication is important for establishing and maintaining an informed community.

The Centre promotes ethical practice and facilitates debate among researchers, academics and practitioners in the field through industry liaison, research, seminars and publications. Australia's leading postgraduate education program in communication management at UTS is linked to the Centre through the teaching staff, students, members and research projects.

In launching the Centre, Governor of NSW, Professor Marie Bashir, said: "I believe that the Australian Centre for Public Communication is an initiative of inestimable importance, as increasingly we are acknowledging the consequences which arise from inaccurate, ambiguous or distorted communication which may adversely affect an individual, a community, or even a nation".
